Day 5, October 21st, Wednesday

It was only slightly overcast on Wednesday, so we decided to head east and drive up Mt. Baker. There were enough clouds that we never actually saw the top of Mt. Baker so don't know if it had snow on it or not. We were surprised at the farm land that went right up to the mountains.

I think the bushes shown here are raspberry bushes. We were told that 95% of all the raspberries grown in the US are grown in the county we were staying in. The name of the county is Whatcom. Every time I saw that name I thought at first glance that it was a web site address.

Seeing these beautiful fall colors made me glad we visited in the fall, in spite of the rainy weather.

Mt. Baker is about 10,000 feet above sea level but the road we took only allowed us to get half way up. There is a ski area a this elevation. I don't know if there is one higher up or not. It was ok that we couldn't go any higher. It was cold enough at this elevation so we didn't stay outside the car for long -- just enough to breathe the good mountain air and smell the evergreens.
