October 17th, Day 1, Sixth blog entry

Still day 1, but it's coming to a close. For lunch we had, guess what, more oysters. This time they were steamed and dipped in butter. That was a first for us and we both agreed they were excellent. In the plate to the right is what was left after our appetizer of smoked salmon. Kirk did this at home and brought it to us. I have to get his recipe. I tried it once and mine turned out rather dry but this was moist and delicious. We also had steamed clams that meal. The teenagers had hamburgers. Imagine, passing up seafood for burgers!

This was an interesting item in the cabin, and yes, it was a live bear and her cub at one time. They were hit by a car and killed so the owner of a local cafe had them stuffed and mounted. The cafe was called The Hungry Bear, even before the bear accident. When the cafe went out of business, the owner of the cabin bought the bears for his place.

The tide is in and the rainbow is out.

Doesn't Denis just look so content and at home. He has a knack for settling in and relaxing wherever he is.

After that big lunch I had to take a nap and it must have been a long one, because while I was sleeping Deidra went to the store for the ingredients to make me a birthday cake. I wasn't going to confess that the 17th was my birthday, but for some reason we started talking about birthdays and I admitted that mine was that very day. She sure did a good job on such short notice and it was a very nice gesture, not to mention a very good cake. What sweet friends we have!
